Dinner Table Conversation

"There's nothing wrong with the word sex." -my mother (if you know my mother, you'll find this funny). She was defending herself after we laughed at her for explaining that politics, religion and sex are topics not to discuss when meeting someone for the first time. We agreed with her statement, but laughed because I don't think any of us had ever heard her say the word so casually before.

Incidentally, the first things asked by anyone in the Arab world upon first meeting an American are (in order): Are you Christian? Are you married? What do you think of George Bush?

Maybe this explains some of the larger obstacles which pop up later in their societal dialogue?
