Deep Breath

"Can you really love a man whose VO2-max is only 59?" -Matt, disappointed with his test results. I'm still not quite sure why he feels that way; I think he is "superior."

59 isn't bad at all! Sure it's not going to get him in the Olympics no matter how hard he tries, but 59 is very respectable! From a person who has a similar VO2max (62) just do longer races(less people there)! Even get a fake ID... try the 55-59 age group... or be bold and go 60-65!

I don't think 59 is 'superior'...more like 'slightly above average'.

Not sure if longer or shorter races would be better from a physiological perspective, but I'll definitely get to work on that fake id!

The hardest part was the blow to my ego. I got an email that said my Vo2 wasn't high enough to qualify for the study I had done the testing for. They were looking for "highly trained" athletes.

I feel your pain... I would rather have never known that I will never be a top endurance athlete no matter how much I train. It was like someone threw all my dreams out the window at that moment(maybe that's a bit dramatic)... On the other hand, that information is also quite liberating once you come to peace with it! It's a good excuse too... "yeah, I wish I could have run faster but my VO2max is only in the 50's"
